Also called the Brazilian Cardinal, this species is one of Hawai`i's most beautiful birds. It is present on all islands, but in fewer numbers on the Big Island. It is a common sight on hotel grounds, golf courses, parks, and even city streets, where it forages in pairs or small family groups. In areas high in human traffic it can become quite tame. Adult birds are gray above and pure white below. The head is a striking bright red with an erect crest. Juveniles differ in having a brown head and dark bill. It was imported to the Hawaiian Islands from South America in the 1930s.
