Golden Sun Mixed Media Art : Textured Acrylic Painting on Canvas Tutorial

Making a textured abstract painting using hot glue texture, recycled paint peelings, acrylic paint and a canvas. I used hot glue to create texture on the canvas. I then used paint peelings to add more texture to the canvas. To make the paint peelings just allow acrylic paint to dry on a non-stick surface (I used the shiny side of the backing of a piece of Mactac, but parchment paper would work well too.)

Project instructions:

@0:07 Draw design on canvas.
(use a pencil to sketch out the design on the canvas.

@0:28 Apply hot glue.
(use a hot glue dispenser and hot glue sticks to add texture to the canvas, as shown.

@2:45 Apply Gesso.
(to make the hot glue texture paintable, apply a thin layer of Gesso to the hot glue texture.)

@3:08 Apply black acrylic paint.
(spread a thick layer of acrylic paint to the canvas with a pallet knife. Make sure the paint is thick enough for the paint chips to stick to.)

@3:13 Ooops! (haha)

@4:05 (add paint chips.
(Sprinkle the paint chips into the wet paint. Cover all the wet paint with the paint chips and allow to dry completely before moving on to the next step.)

@5:27 Shake off excess loose texturing material.
(once the canvas is completely dry remove all loose bits from the canvas.)

@6:52 waste not, want not.
(collect all loose bits of paint peel texture and save them for another art project.)

@7:09 Paint the hot glue texture.
(paint the hot glue texture with black acrylic paint and a paintbrush. Allow to dry completely before continuing.)

@7:58 Apply Gold acrylic paint
(apply gold paint to the raised surface of the hot glue texture using a wedge makeup sponge. You can also use you fingertip to apply the gold paint, if needed.)

@8:31 Varnish art piece.
(When the paint is dry apply matte varnish to protect artwork-not shown here.)
