In this Balkan Travel Vlog, we hitchhike for the first time through Montenegro to visit Spomeniks scattered throughout the country.

First off, what is a Spomenik? Spomeniks (the Serbo-Croatian/Slovenian word for 'monument') are memorials built from the 1950s-1990s during Tito's Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, whose primary intent was to honor its people's resistance struggle during the People's Liberation Struggle (1941-1945) (aka WWII) against Axis occupation and oppression.

Our goal for today was to visit as many Spomeniks as possible. We hitchhiked to multiple Spomeniks and met such amazing people while hitchhiking. The first time we hitchhiked we were picked up by a wonderful woman who invited us into her home. She fed us and spoke with us for over an hour. We couldn’t have asked for a better first experience hitchhiking in Europe!

With such an incredible first attempt at hitchhiking, we continued to do it throughout the day. We ended up visiting a total of five Spomeniks. Each Spomenik was unique and different in its own way. We’d highly recommend people visit Spomeniks while in Montenegro.
