Hi, Matt with etrailer. And today, we're gonna talk about the Yakima SkyBox NX 16 Roof Box on a 2021 Jeep Compass. Now, this can be a great option for you if you're really looking at maximizing what you can hold on your Compass. Maybe you run into the situation where the back's filled up with people or is already filled up with other things, or maybe you're trying to haul something that just doesn't fit in the back, the SkyBox is gonna be a great option for you. Now, let's take a closer look at it. The reason why it has 16 in the name is because it can hold up to 16 cubit feet.

And it's also gonna have a weight capacity of 165 pounds. But also keep in mind what your roof can handle, because you're gonna have to consider the weight of your crossbars and the box itself, which is around 40 pounds. And if you try to max this out, you could exceed what your roof can handle. What's nice about the SkyBox is you can open this up from either side just by unlocking it and pulling on that lever. And once you've got that up, you can just push the top open, and then you can access the inside of your box.

And the design that we have inside is gonna have these channels, and that's just gonna help keep your gear above anything like any water or debris on the bottom. Also, we're gonna have a spot for an included tool, and this can help you cinch down these clamps. (clamp clicking) And what's nice about that is it has a built-in torque device. Now, let's take a closer look at those clamps. Two things I like about these clamps is, one, they don't take a lot of space.

As you can see, we have a decent amount of space in between our clamp and the top of our roof. And the second thing I do like is these can slide up and down on a tray, and that's gonna be able to accommodate different crossbar spreads. And when you've got all your gear out or your luggage out, you can close it up. That's something I do like. If you are a shorter person, you can grab the string and pull down on it.

That's gonna make closing this a lot easier. (roof box thudding) And when you get to this point, you'll notice if I try to take my key out and finish up with it, it won't. You actually have this red portion still showing, and that lets us know that this isn't shut all the way. It's a safety mechanism that's built into the box. (roof box thudding) Now, you see when I shut it all the way and it clicks in the place, that red portion disappears. Now, just push on the lever and then take your key out. As for how it's gonna sit up here, it's gonna add 16 inches to the top of your roof rack system. So that's important to note if you're trying to store this in your garage or try to go under any little clearance areas. Just make sure you take the total height and add everything together. And as for how much space it's gonna take up on your crossbars, today, we got 49 inch bars, and this is gonna take up a majority of it. But that's not a bad thing, since if you have this on here anyways, it's probably gonna be maxing out most of the weight capacity of your roof. And like I said earlier, you can access this from either side, so you don't have to worry about that either. And also, how it's sitting up here is gonna be really nice, because today, we have fixed crossbars. In a lot of cases, fixed crossbars are gonna be the only option for the Compass. So with the way it sits up here too and how it can accommodate different crossbar spreads and even slide to different positions puts it in a nice spot right here. As you can see, it's not gonna really interfere with our hatch, and it's not gonna make contact with our antenna either. But it's also not gonna sit too far forward or kinda interferes with your vision up front. And this gonna be constructed from an ABS plastic, making it very durable. And we're gonna have this nano-texture finish to it, helping it be more scratch resistant. Overall, this is gonna be a great option for you if you're really wanting to maximize what you can carry and if you want any items on top of your roof, but you don't want them getting dirty or being out on the elements. Now, if you don't mind them being out on the elements, I'd actually recommend a roof basket, something like the SkinnyWarrior. It's gonna be really nice to keep up here, and it's gonna give you more space to put anything else here too. But if you want things more protected and you really don't need the other
