In this lecture, we explore the world just before the coming of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, beginning with a careful examination of his lineage and the meaning carried within it. Rather than listing names as historical trivia, the scholars of sīrah preserved ancestry as a record of preparation—names shaped by circumstance, aspiration, strength, and leadership. From ʿAdnān back to Ismāʿīl and Ibrāhīm, and through the lived histories of figures such as ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Hāshim, and Quṣayy, we see how the Prophet ﷺ emerged not from obscurity, but from a lineage known, preserved, and respected across Arabia and beyond. The lecture also examines the Prophet’s ﷺ ancestral and familial ties to Egypt through Hājar and Māriyah, explaining why the sīrah emphasizes covenant, kinship, and moral responsibility toward certain peoples.
The second half of the lecture turns to the famous account of Satīḥ and Shiqq and the dream of Rabiʿah ibn Naṣr, king of Yemen. This narrative offers a window into the practice of kihānah—pre-Islamic soothsaying—and its limits. While such figures could sense political upheaval and even the approach of Prophethood, their knowledge remained fragmented, fearful, and without guidance. Their predictions contrast sharply with revelation, which would soon replace riddles with clarity and anxiety with moral direction. Through this account, we reflect on key themes of دلائل النبوة، الفضائل، والخصائص, showing how the Prophet ﷺ was anticipated by kings, sensed by false systems, and yet truly known only when Allah revealed him—bringing an end to soothsayers and the beginning of light after darkness.
