All eyes are on the Madras High Court, which is set to deliver its verdict on the Thiruparan Kundram Deepam pillar dispute.

The case centers on the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam atop Thiruparan Kundram hill, claimed by petitioners to be a centuries-old tradition. The DMK government, HR & CE department, and local dargah administration challenged an earlier single-judge order permitting the ritual.

The government argued there is no historical evidence of a lamp pillar at the site, citing a 1920 judicial survey, and emphasized that the matter involves land and property rights, which should be resolved in a civil court.

Petitioners maintain that lighting the Deepam is a fundamental religious right. With arguments concluded, the division bench has reserved its verdict, which could finally settle this long-running dispute.
