Sri Mopuru Bhairaveswara Swami Temple

Situated in the heart of the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, Mopuru Bhairaveswara Swami temple stands for its unique serenity, devotion, mystique, and peace. Legend says that Lord Shiva, after granting a wish to Bhasmasura, the demon was in a fix and stood in the form of rock as Bhairavewswara on this hillock and Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini enticed Bhasmasura for his death at this place. The name Mohanagiri Bhairaveswara later changed to Mopuru Bhairaveswara in the present form.

It is believed that the rock form of Bhairaveswara was growing continuously, and his sister put her hand over him to stop the growth of the rock. Enraged by this Lord Bhairaveswara asked the sister to leave the place, and she stands in the form Akka Pappuramma at the base of this hillock. People believe that the religious trip is incomplete unless they worship Akka Pappuramma.

The temple is situated on a hillock surrounded by a river and villages of Nallachervu Palle, Kondreddi Palle, Nare Palle, etc. of Vemula Mandalam of Kadapa district. The temple can be reached by bus from Pulivendula ( to either Nallachervu Palle or Kondredi Palle) or from Prodattur (to Moilchervu or Narepalle) from where one has to walk a distance of about 3 to 4 km. Road up to the temple is available which is about 30 minutes from Pulivendula and 60 minutes from Prodattur.

Inscriptions found at the temple date back to 12th Century AD, wherein Kakatiya rulers also worshipped at this temple. Through the centuries, visitors from not only Andhra Pradesh were visiting the temple but also from neighboring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. A large number of Nayanars offered their worship to Load Shiva at this place, as displayed by a large number of their statutes at the temple. Navagraha pratishtha was completed and many devotees of Swami Ayyappa (born out of wedlock of Mohini of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva) take their Deeksha here before embarking their journey to Kerala for seeking the blessings of Swami Ayyappa. With the contributions from the devotees and the financial aid from the Endowment Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh, renovation of Garbha Gopuram, construction of a Gali Gopuram and Kalyana Mandapam has been completed.

Recently, a Suprabhatam CD has been released. Though devotees pour from all the places, this website makes a humble beginning to gather all the devotees on to a single platform so that the blessings of Lord Bhairaveswara are showered on all of us.
