My mom is now almost 70 and her reaction to my autism diagnosis shocked me but it probably wouldn’t surprise other autistic people. I mean what do you expect when you tell someone from that generation that you’re A? Oh, wow, that’s a good thing. Do you see the gifts in this? Do you see how that is like being twice exceptional? Or it’s even a superpower.

Umm no.

Her reaction was typical. She felt sorry for me.

Now it was the best reaction I got from someone close to me, like my dad’s reaction, so I should be thankful but I’m disappointed.

Because this is what she said.

She said, well, everyone is a little bit autistic. I’m sure I do so many things that are autistic.

Yes, mom, you do. And I say this respectfully because you actually own it.

But why did it hurt so much to get the “everyone is a little bit autistic” response from her?
