Interesting tip.... play the game with a turbo controller that has slow mo ( pause and un-pause super fast ) the games' slowdown is exacerbated by this, and you CAN loop the music past the point it would normally fade out at the end of the level, MUCH sooner... So if you want to play Super R-Type like you have never seen... err... heard... before..., slow mo this stage, and you can get to the second part of the song while playing... its a cool experience!
