Back in October 2023, I began a trip from Switzerland to China with Lufthansa Group. This report covers the first leg from Basel to Munich onboard a Lufthansa CityLine Bombardier CRJ900. It was my second time flying on Lufthansa’s CRJ900.
Since I was connecting to a long-haul flight in Munich, I had to check in luggage—something I rarely do at Basel. Fortunately, there was no queue, and I was able to use the Business Class counter. Check-in was smooth, and the agent carefully verified my entry documents for China, as an online health form was still required at the time. Security was quick, leaving me some time for plane spotting before departure.
Our flight was slightly delayed due to the late arrival of the inbound aircraft. Luckily, I had a long layover in Munich, so it wasn’t an issue. Today’s aircraft was a CRJ900 in Lufthansa’s new livery. Boarding was done by group, and since the CRJ is a small regional jet, there was no jet bridge—we walked directly to the aircraft.
The CRJ900 feels extremely compact. Even at under 1.8 meters tall, I almost brushed the ceiling. The stairs were narrow and steep, so caution is definitely needed. Overhead bins are very small, meaning larger carry-ons must be handed to ground staff and stored in the hold, then collected when leaving the plane—so don’t forget them.
The cabin is arranged in a 2-2 configuration. Seats recline and offer surprisingly good legroom. The tray table was standard, and the seat pocket contained a safety card, sickness bag, menu, and duty-free magazine. There was also a coat hook and personal air vents overhead. Overall, a typical regional jet interior.
I had originally selected seat 25A in the last row for free during online check-in. However, the crew suggested moving to 24A due to the intense engine noise in the very back. I accepted—and was glad I did. Even one row forward made a difference, as the rear is extremely loud. From 24A, I still had a fantastic view of the left engine, which was a rare treat for someone used to flying A320s.
Takeoff from runway 15 was powerful—and very loud from the rear cabin. After departure, the crew served a small bottle of water and some chocolate, the usual short-haul Lufthansa service. After just 35 minutes airborne, we were already descending into Munich, treated to a beautiful sunset on approach.
We parked on a remote stand at Munich, and buses transported passengers to the terminal. Some travelers were clearly stressed due to tight connections caused by the delay. To make matters worse, there was an ID check by customs officers before entering the terminal area, which slowed things down further. Thankfully, I had plenty of time and wasn’t affected.
Overall, it was a typical Lufthansa short-haul experience with a friendly crew. The main downsides were the delay and slightly chaotic arrival in Munich. As for the CRJ900, the rear cabin is extremely noisy—great if you enjoy engine sounds, but not ideal for a quiet ride. The small overhead bins and low ceiling can also be challenging, especially for taller passengers.
Still, I’d happily fly Lufthansa again—especially since I’ve earned status with them and plan to maintain it.
