Then, three of them challenged him. Sparked by Lukashenko’s victory in the presidential election that many in Belarus and abroad labelled as rigged, mass protests swept Belarus in August 2020. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets in Minsk and other cities to oppose Lukashenko’s authoritarian rule and demand democratic change.

Three women, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Maria Kolesnikova and Veronika Tsepkalo, became their unlikely leaders. Their unity became the symbol of resistance that was quickly and brutally suppressed by Lukashenko’s regime. Five years on, Tikhanovskaya and Tsepkalo, both living in exile, are speaking to the BBC about how they led the largest protests in Belarus history – and the price they paid for it.
