The water we drink today is often thought of as something “new”.
But scientifically, water on Earth is almost never really new.

The Earth has a closed system called the hydrological cycle. In this system, water is constantly circulating: evaporating from seas, rivers and lakes, rising into the atmosphere, forming clouds, then falling back to the surface as rain. The water then seeps into the ground, flows into rivers, returns to the sea, and repeats the same process.

This cycle has been going on for billions of years, since long before humans existed. This means that the water molecules you drink today have likely passed through many places and times — perhaps they were drunk by humans in the past, used by ancient animals, or flowed in rivers in ancient civilizations.

Water is not recreated every time we drink it. It just changes shape and location. Every sip of water is part of the long journey of the Earth itself.
