Truck art in Pakistan has always been considered as a recognisable symbol of art. Rarely, did trucks have an image of a girl with a book or empowered images of girls and men standing up for women and girls. Keeping its traditionally vibrancy intact but giving it a meaning.
Samar Minallah Khan, an anthropologist and a filmmaker introduced the idea of using trucks for advocacy in Pakistan. She changed the scene with carefully designed messages and images that were painted on the backs of the trucks carrying them from one part of Pakistan to another.
These moving billboards are a testament to the power of art and indigenous tools for advocacy. Trucks are helping in not only changing mindsets but also in educated masses about the laws and solutions to address problems.
Samar and her team of truck artists have worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan, Asian Development Bank (ADB's) Legal Literacy for Women, UNESCO, Pakistan, Right to Play on issues related to legal literacy for women in Pakistan, Child Marriages, Right to Inheritance, Right to Play, Right to Education etc.
The messages are developed with the help of local artists and community members to ensure the cultural sensitivities and ownership.
This innovative idea has won several international accolades for its originality and innovation. This project has gone on to win various accolades and collaborations domestically and internationally. The idea of 'Moving Billboards' has been recognised for its innovation and originality in various creative circles, including Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2019
