Plaster (discoloration, modeling, brushing)

Once your pool is filled with water and Mirage has told you it’s ok to get in, you’ll want to start enjoying your new pool right away! But the first two weeks of a brand-new pool’s life are some of the most crucial. To keep your pool beautiful for years to come there are a few things you’ll need to do to ensure the best results. One of the biggest things is taking care of your plaster. Plaster is inherently an imperfect product because of how it is applied and how it cures. Unlike paint applied to a car, plaster color is mixed into concrete then applied to your pool by hand. After the pool is filled with water, the plaster actually cures under water over nine months. 80% of the curing process occurs in the first two weeks. So, if you see undulations, color variations, or trowel marks, that is normal due to the nature of plaster. As plaster cures, calcium leaches out into the water. You will see a white haziness in your pool. This is the calcium. If the calcium sits for too long on the floors, benches, or ledges of the pool, it can cause efflorescence which looks like white streaks. Mirage will add acid to the water to lower the PH level in an attempt to lessen the chances of this happening but the MOST important thing to do is to brush your pool. Mirage recommends that you brush your pool twice a day for the first two weeks. Brushing your pool suspends the calcium and mixes up the acid. It also keeps things that might get into your pool like tree buds, leaves, fertilizer from sitting on the floor of pool which could stain the plaster during the curing process. As you brush your pool, you’ll want to brush the walls, steps, benches, and the floor towards the main drains where everything will get sucked back to the pool equipment. Stains are not covered by a warranty so it’s important to keep a close eye on your pool for the first two weeks. After the two weeks is over, your pool will still be leaching out a certain amount of calcium for the next nine months so the pool will require a little more acid than normal to stabilize the PH level but after the nine months is complete the PH will level out. For this reason, Mirage also recommends that a pool service maintain your water chemistry for the first year after the construction is completed, as it will require a certain level of knowledge to balance the water chemistry.
