I'm continuing this run with no defensive items besides Duke and barely surviving. Somehow I managed to beat the boss despite not picking up any defensive items at all in world 2.

Learn how to play the huntress in PokerQuest.

The huntress is one of the best characters in the game because she has the poison spear, which is a really good DPS equipment.

If you're having trouble with other characters, I highly recommend the huntress. Other characters are more reliant on buying DPS weapons at the shop in order to clear the first boss. The huntress starts with a decent DPS weapon so in most cases you can clear the first boss even if you have bad luck with shops.
