Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper has promised to tackle longstanding problems with the city’s special education system, which channels Black and brown students into special education programs at a much higher rate than their white peers. But some parents say they've heard these promises before. Ruby Reyes, director of the Boston Education Justice Alliance, and Michael Krezmien, a professor of special education at UMass Amherst and the director for the school's Center for Youth Engagement, joined Liz Neisloss to discuss how institutional racism in Boston has exacerbated these disparities and how some students get left behind.
