As America faces the possibility of electing its first black president, many African Americans are expressing cautious optimism.

Barack Obama's potential victory represents a previously unimaginable triumph over centuries of racism.
African-Americans are expected to vote this year in record numbers.
In states like Georgia and North Carolina, at least 30 percent of early votes have been cast by blacks.
But beneath the hope lies fears of polling inaccuracies or voting supression.
To combat that fear schools and churches are encouraging African-Americans to head to cast their ballots _ no matter what.
While federal law prohibits churches from officially endorsing a candidate, Macedonia Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia is encouraging its parishoners to get out and vote _ no matter what.

"if for whatever reason when you go to vote on Nov 4th your name is not on roster at your polling place, please ask for a provisional ballot. You still need to vote, ok? Do not leave the polls without voting."
Many parishoner say it hasn't been hard to get people excited about this election.

"it's definitely something that is historical. it's something that we're all ready for and change is certainly on everyone's mind."

Poll numbers show Obama leading in several key battleground states, including Virginia.
