White blood cells (WBCs) are a key part of the body's immune system, fighting infection and disease. They are also known as leukocytes.
How they work
WBCs ingest foreign materials and cellular debris
They destroy infectious agents and cancer cells
They produce antibodies
They flow through the bloodstream to fight viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders
Where they are found
WBCs are made in the bone marrow
They are stored in the blood and lymph tissues
Most WBCs are found outside the bloodstream, within tissues
Types of WBCs
Granulocytes: Neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils
Monocytes: Macrophages, dendritic cells, and mast cells
Lymphocytes: B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells
