May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. I've been wanting to do something to bring more awareness mental health is a very serious issue to me.

If you think you may hurt yourself or attempt suicide, get help right away by taking one of these actions:

Call a mental health specialist.
Call a suicide hotline number — in the United States, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor.
Use that same number and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.
Call 911 or your local emergency number.
Seek help from your doctor or other health care provider.
Reach out to a close friend or loved one.
Contact a minister, spiritual leader or someone else in your faith community.

This particular hike evolved into a mental health discussion that I felt had an important enough message to post publically.

This is extremly uncomfortable for me as I have always tried to hide things like this but I have realized that having emotional difficulty is nothing to be embarassed about. It's actually something we need to talk about.

Currently, in May of 2021 most people might assume that Covid-19 is to blame. Actually, even before COVID-19, the prevalence of mental illness among adults was increasing. In 2017-2018, 19% of adults experienced a mental illness, an increase of 1.5 million people over last year’s dataset.

What's worse is suicidal ideation among adults is increasing. The percentage of adults in the U.S. who are experiencing serious thoughts of suicide increased 0.15% from 2016-2017 to 2017-2018 – an additional 460,000 people from last year’s dataset.

The hopelessness you feel as you consider suicide may be the side effect of a difficult situation or an illness that can be treated. This emotion can be so overpowering that it clouds your judgment and leads you to believe that taking your own life is the best, or only, option.

So, please, just seek some sort of help. You are more appreciated and loved than you realize.
