Описание к видео Doctor explains Adenoidectomy |

In this video Dr O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about an Adenoidectomy.

An adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the adenoids, which are small lumps of tissue located at the back of the throat behind the nose. It's typically performed in children to address problems caused by enlarged adenoids, such as difficulty breathing through the nose, snoring, sleep apnea, and frequent ear infections.

What are adenoids?
Adenoids are part of the immune system, helping to fight infection.
They are located in the nasopharynx, the area behind the nose and above the throat.

Adenoids can become enlarged, especially in young children, and this can cause various health issues.

Why is an adenoidectomy performed?

Nasal obstruction: Enlarged adenoids can block the nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe through the nose and leading to mouth breathing and snoring.
Sleep apnea: The blockage can also cause sleep apnea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
Ear infections: Adenoids can affect the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the throat, potentially leading to recurrent ear infections and "glue ear" (fluid buildup in the middle ear).

Other issues:
In some cases, enlarged adenoids can also cause speech problems or difficulty swallowing.

What happens during the procedure?
Adenoidectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning the child will be asleep during the surgery. The surgeon removes the adenoids through the mouth, without any external incisions. The procedure typically takes around 20-30 minutes.

Recovery:
After the surgery, children may experience some discomfort, such as a sore throat or ear pain. They may also have a runny nose, noisy breathing, or bad breath. Most children recover fully within a few days to a couple of weeks.

The problems caused by the enlarged adenoids (like snoring or breathing difficulties) usually improve quickly after the surgery.
