Operational amplifiers can be made to work as a differentiator.
In an inverting amplifier, if we replace the input resistance with a capacitor , we can get a differentiator.
A differentiator can be used to get an output which is the derivative of the input signal.
A differentiator can also be used as a edge detector and as high pass filter.

But the frequency response of the simple differentiator shows that the gain is directly proportional to frequency. As the frequency increases, gain also increases leading to high frequency noise.
This may lead to instablility and oscillations under high frtequency conditions.
Moreover, the input impedance is very low.
To overcome this limitation, a pratical differentiator has resistor in series with the input capcitor and a capacitor in parallel with the feedback resistor.
