On the morning of August 3, 2024, at about 10:25 AM, a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer was conducting a routine forest patrol in Blackwater River State Forest in Santa Rosa County when dispatch alerted them to a report of an increasingly disorderly campsite at the Indian Ford Primitive Area.
At around 10:50 AM, the officer arrived at the location and saw a male camper lying inside an open tent. After announcing their presence, the officer observed that the camper had several alcoholic beverages, including Busch Light beer, even though signage in the area clearly prohibited alcohol. The site was cluttered with empty cans and plastic bottles. The camper had also used a freshly cut juniper tree as support for the tent, and palm fronds recently cut from living vegetation were being fashioned into a mat. An axe and a saw were found at the site, and the camper admitted to cutting the tree from nearby forest land, which is against regulations.
An unrestrained dog was also at the campsite. While the officer believed the dog to belong to the camper, the camper denied ownership.
A check with dispatch revealed the camper had an outstanding civil arrest warrant for failure to pay child support in a neighboring county. At about 11:20 AM, the officer placed the camper under arrest on that warrant.
At the camper’s request, the officer used an agency phone to contact a family member. The camper explained the situation, and the family member agreed to come retrieve their belongings from the campsite. A second officer arrived and took custody of the loose dog, which was later handed over to animal control. That officer stayed at the campsite to wait for the family member’s arrival.
The camper was taken to the local jail, where they were processed on the out-of-county warrant. They were also cited for having alcoholic beverages in a restricted area, for littering under 15 pounds of trash, and for cutting trees and plants within the state forest. The transfer to jail occurred without incident.
After booking was completed, the first officer returned to the campsite to replace the second officer. At approximately 3:10 PM, the family member arrived and collected the camper’s property.
