A VP shunt, or ventriculoperitoneal shunt, is a surgical procedure used to treat hydrocephalus, a condition in which there is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles (cavities) of the brain. The excess CSF can cause an increase in intracranial pressure, which can lead to brain damage and other serious health problems. During the procedure, a tube is inserted into one of the ventricles in the brain and tunneled under the skin to the abdomen. The other end of the tube is connected to a valve, which is typically located just above the collarbone. The valve can be adjusted to allow more or less CSF to drain out of the brain and into the abdomen, where it is absorbed into the body. VP shunts are typically used in cases where other treatments, such as medications or other surgical procedures, have not been effective in controlling hydrocephalus. They are commonly used in children, but can also be used in adults. The procedure is typically performed by a neurosurgeon, and usually requires a hospital stay of several days.
