I had a hard time finding general books on Tijuana, and the ones I found were pretty dry. So I'll just say that there are a grip of articles on the internet, in English, about the city. I encourage you to search out more details if you're interested - try not to ONLY read about the bad stuff, though.

There is a great book on Tijuana's Prohibition past, however, centered on the Agua Caliente resort; the title is Satan's Playground, a reference to an old nickname of the city. You can find that here:

As far as getting a finger on the pulse of Tijuana today, a good source for up to date information (and a place to ask questions, if you have them) would be the Tijuana-centered corner of reddit.
