This is the new MINI John Cooper Works!

If you’re in the market for a petrol-powered front-wheel drive three-door hot hatch, then you’re in luck! This is the only one available to buy new in the UK today. The question is, how does this new MINI JCW stack up against its predecessor? And should you choose it over competitors like the Hyundai i20 N? It’s time to take a closer look.

When it comes to the exterior design, there are a couple of changes over the standard MINI Cooper. Up front, there’s a redesigned grille with a checkered flag effect and a more aggressive front bumper. The car we have here also has stripes across the bonnet, although they’re a £200 option. Along the side, there are red brake callipers, a two-tone roof, and two-tone surrounds for the side mirrors. At the back, there’s a large roof spoiler, a redesigned diffuser, and a central, single exhaust pipe.

On the inside, the car is almost identical to the standard MINI Cooper. There’s some JCW badging and stainless steel pedals, but otherwise, it’s pretty much identical! That’s no bad thing, though - it has a couple of unique features and functions, and the seats are pretty comfortable. The main feature is the large, circular infotainment screen, which is bright and pretty responsive. We’re not sure it’s the best operating system, though…

When it comes to the engine, the JCW has the same 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo as the standard MINI Cooper. However, in this instance, it produces 231hp and 380Nm - 27hp & 80Nm more than the standard car. It also comes with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The MINI JCW starts from £33,265, while the car we have here has several options fitted to it, and costs £36,350. So is it worth it? Or are you better off buying a used alternative instead? Stick with Mat to see for yourself!
