Описание к видео A Barrister's Guide to Ranking: Q&A with Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500

On Monday 22 February 2021, the Black Barristers' Network held a Q&A with the leading legal directories to provide information on how barristers can become ranked.

In our recent survey of Black barristers, we identified some concerns around support Black barristers receive from their chambers and career progression:

• 53% of respondents thought the allocation of work in chambers had been negatively affected by their race or were uncertain as to whether it had been.

• Most respondents felt high levels of encouragement from chambers to promote themselves (63%). However, almost all respondents who indicated low levels of encouragement were female.

• 54% of respondents felt they had been treated inappropriately by opponents because of their race at some point, particularly for those more than 7 years’ call.

• 40% felt they had received low levels of support from chambers in terms of career progression.

• 50% thought the support they received in career progression was negatively affected by race or were uncertain as to whether it had been.

In light of the above, we teamed up with the leading legal directories to clarify what individuals affected by these concerns can do to boost and take ownership of directory submissions processes and raise their public profiles.

During this 90-minute Q&A session, both directories provided a brief overview of how their ranking systems work before answering questions. The focus of the event was on individual rather than organisational level submissions and provided barristers with a clearer idea of how to make an argument for their chambers or firm to support their application; and what they can do to make sure they are ready to apply.
