The "eastern ring road" in Coimbatore is actually a proposed Coimbatore Eastern Bypass project, an 81-kilometer road connecting six national highways to ease city traffic. While there is an existing 28-km bypass on the western side, the Eastern Bypass is a long-term, strategically important infrastructure project that is currently awaiting approval from authorities.

Calling for widening of existing roads, the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association has questioned the need for the construction of Eastern Bypass Road for Coimbatore by the National Highways Authority of India by acquiring farm lands..

Industry organisations in Coimbatore had reasoned out that the Eastern Bypass Road project that would connect six major National Highways: Mettupalayam Road (NH 181), Sathyamangalam Road (NH 948), Avinashi Road (NH 544), Tiruchi Road (NH 81), Pollachi Road (NH 83) and Palakkad Road (NH 544), would ease congestion in the city and suburbs. The project was announced in 2016 by the then AIADMK government, and the NHAI had proposed to execute the it alongside the Coimbatore-Karur Greenfield Expressway project.

However, farmers fear loss of agricultural lands. “The Eastern Bypass Road to a length of 81 km warrants acquisition of 1,200 acres of farm land. This will not be allowed.

Instead, the NHAI could widen stretches of Palladam-Kochi Road and Karanampettai-Karumathampatti-Annur Road. The government has already announced four-laning of Avinashi-Mettupalayam Road. Hence, the NHAI could even convert the Avinashi-Palladam Road into a four-lane carriageway..
