Carnaby's Black Cockatoos Calling

The Carnaby's Cockatoo is listed as an endangered species. Between 1970 and 1990 Carnaby's Black cockatoos disappeared from over one-third of their former range. Now they are locally extinct in many parts of their former habitat. Between Autumn and late Spring, a small flock flies across our property from the west in the morning, and back from the east every evening. Sometimes they stop for a drink or a small rest before they continue. During spring they regularly visit Ellenbrae to feed on the gum nuts and seeds in the meadows. They always announce themselves with their shrill cry as they fly above us. We feel very privileged to provide a habitat which helps to sustain these beautiful creatures and always look up with a smile when they fly overhead.
