Описание к видео They burned down her house, but she got it back 85 years later

They burned down her house when she was a child, but after eighty-five years, she got her house back.

Opal Lee was only 12 years old when her parents bought a house in Fort Worth, Texas, in June 1939. But what she didn't know was that just 5 days later, her life would take a dramatic turn. An angry mob gathered to run her family out, vandalizing their furniture, and burning the house to the ground.

The trauma was so intense that the family moved away and never spoke about that horror again. Opal however, never forgot that night and dedicated her whole life to raising awareness about freedom. She was the person who pushed Juneteenth, the day that marked the end of slavery in the US, into a national holiday. Later, in 2024, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

But Opal never forgot about that old property that was once burnt out. When she found out that the land was owned by Trinity Habitat for Humanity, she immediately contacted them to buy it. To her surprise, they said they wouldn't sell it but instead gifted it back to her. Not only did they return the land, but they also gathered donations and volunteers to build her a brand new house. After 85 years, the house that was once destroyed with hate is now built with love, and at 97 years old, Opal could finally move back home.
