For this Hunt Showdown gameplay compilation, I take the Winfield M1876 Centennial out for a spin. This new addition to the Hunt Showdown arsenal was added with update 1.5 and is proving to be an interesting weapon. I had some good matches playing the new medium ammo Winfield and I hope the gameplay in this video will also showcase the weapon's strenghts and weaknesses.
But the question you might want answered: "Do you like the Winfield Centennial?"
Yes! And no.
In my opinion, the Centennial is a very good rifle. I like it. I clicked with this gun the very first match I played with it, it's insane how good this weapon feels for me in PVP. Most of it's statistics also speak very much to its advantage. The Centennial does 123 damage to the chest at the 10m range, it has a bullet velocity of 600m/s and it can be levered. The fact that it fires medium ammo makes that it can properly penetrate cover and it's available full metal jacket (FMJ) custom ammo even makes its bullets the equivalent of long ammo that is being fired! This all seems rather impressive to me and the gun also feels impressive when using it as part of your loadout in the Bayou.
But there are plenty of points which makes me question how much I will eventually use the Winfield M1876 Centennial. To summarize some topics which (in my opinion) count against this weapon:
1. The Centennial fires medium ammo, which is damage-wise maybe not the best, especially if you take the damage drop-off into consideration. (Google: "hunt showdown damage drop off chart".) It's in this awkward spot between long ammo (higher damage, lower rpm) and compact ammo (lower damage, higher rpm), which means that at distance you will need a second (and possibly third) hit to get the kill.
2. The bullet velocity of the weapon is incredibly fast, in my opinion. 600m/s is Mosin-level fast. Which means (again, my opinion) that the Centennial is practically hitscan in close range (upto 30/40m) and even beyond that will take little adjusting. But, as you're firing a Winfield and you're like me, you will often auto-adjust to the muscle memory you've built up playing the other (compact ammo) Winfields and might lead your shots too much.
*. Add to this that, in the range that the Centennial is practically hitscan, you have alternatives (which you already know) that will also two-tap at a much faster firerate, even when the Centennial is being levered. (Winfield M1873, Officer Carbine, ...)
3. The Centennial can be levered, but the levering is... not that great. The bloom and the recoil is rather big. You're not going to have issues to hit the broad side of a barn, but I do put question marks on it's fidelity. Also, it's slower than the other Winfields. It's more of a "hail Mary" type of deal, in my opinion, much like the LeMat's shotgun was before 1.5 dropped. Levering should, in my opinion, not count towards the Centennial's strong points.
4. It's custom ammo adds barely any benefit to this gun. Poison ammo is (again, in my opinion) a meme-level ammunition type. Full Metal Jacket might give you the power to penetrate cover as if you were firing long ammo, but (and the following is in my opinion the determining factor) . . .
5. For $50 more (above the base cost of the Centennial) you can buy a Lebel, which fires actual long ammo with it's own benefits.
*. Also worth adding that buying FMJ for the Centennial comes with its own additional cost above the base cost of the gun, which makes the Lebel look even more interesting.
I can go on and on about this weapon, to be honest.
But, point in case: In my opinion, even though it's a good weapon, the Winfield Centennial is not worth its price at the current time. For it's pricepoint, either buy a Lebel or seek a cheaper alternative. For example the Vetterli Karabiner (which I've raved about in the past) costs less than a third, for example. And that gun is an absolute monster if you invest the traitpoints into Iron Sharpshooter.
Enjoy the video!
