During his period of exile under Philistine rule, David navigated a complex political landscape while maintaining strategic independence. Although nominally a vassal of King Achish of Gath, David conducted independent raids while preserving Philistine trust. By fostering relationships with Philistine leaders and neighboring tribes, David solidified key alliances that would later aid his rise to power. The Amarna Letters reflect this dynamic, with Achish’s counterpart in the letters identified as Suwardata, a leader who faced a major conflict with the Habiru forces. Despite the apparent difference in names, both Achish and Suwardata share the same etymological meaning: "The Sun has Given," reinforcing the connection between the two figures.

The Amarna Letters provide further insight into the final confrontation between the pro-Egyptian coalition and the Habiru rebels. In Amarna Letter 283, Suwardata describes the dire state of his campaign, reporting that he faced opposition from 30 cities in a war believed to mirror the Philistine battle against King Saul at Mount Gilboa. The biblical account in 1 Samuel 28 details how David was initially expected to join Achish in the battle but was ultimately rejected by the other Philistine commanders, who feared he might betray them to regain favor with Saul. This aligns remarkably with the Amarna Letters, where Tagi of Gintikirmil and Ili-Milku — two leaders previously allied with Suwardata — are notably absent from the final confrontation. This parallel suggests David’s absence from the battle described in the Bible reflects his detachment from the conflict recorded in the Amarna texts.

The aftermath of the battle presents even stronger synchronisms between the Amarna Letters and the biblical account. Letter 366 records Suwardata's victory over the Habiru forces, describing the capture and execution of the Habiru leader — a fate that aligns with Saul's death at Mount Gilboa as described in 1 Samuel 31. Additionally, Amarna Letter 245 mentions a military general named Bal-Mehr, whose name bears a striking phonetic resemblance to Abner, Saul’s loyal commander. These overlapping details provide compelling evidence that the biblical account and the Amarna records are describing the same conflict, with David’s political maneuvering and absence from the battle closely mirroring the roles of Tagi and Ili-Milku in the Amarna texts.
