Filmed on location at Hallsands Bay and Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum in Devon, UK. This video tells the story of the Hallsands Tragedy in which greed was responsible for the loss of almost an entire village. The Local landowner agreed to sell the shingle from off-shore to an unscrupulous company who were responsible for enlarging Devonport Docks. Over a period of 10 years the beach receded dramatically until the houses which had stood for 300 years began to be undermined. In the space of two final nights in January 1917, storms finally wiped out the houses, pub, road and reading room leaving behind only one habitable house. In this house lived Elizabeth Prettyjohn who chose to remain amidst the ruins of the village until her dying day. This is her story.
