It’s bath time! In today’s Japan travel vlog, we’re visiting Kyushu’s famous traditional onsen town, Kurokawa Onsen, to take a private bath together before eating a popular Japanese soul food unique to Kumamoto Prefecture and visiting one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, Mt. Aso. See the description below for more details on the locations shown in our trip vlog!

Places we visited:
♨️ Kurokawa Onsen private onsen, Yamamizuki Onsen (山みず木): https://yamamizuki.com/
▶︎ Kyushu in west Japan is famous for its onsen (hot springs). Due to the volcanic activity of the nearby Mt. Aso, Kurokawa Onsen town in Kumamoto Prefecture is one of the best onsens in Japan and in Kyushu, second only to Beppu Onsen in Oita Prefecture. The traditional onsen town has been one of the most popular onsen resorts in Japan for over 300 years and there are 28 hot springs to choose between making it a great option for day-trippers!
Visiting an onsen for the first time? Get a Nyuto Tegata onsen-hopping pass, which allows you to try 3 different public baths for only 1300 yen or book your own private onsen for couples or families.
🥬 Asoji to eat Aso takana (mustard greens): https://asoji.com/
▶︎ Looking for what to eat in Kumamoto? Takana-meshi (mustard green fried rice) is a must-try Japanese soul food dish. The takana grown in Aso, Kumamoto is unique as it relies on the cold climate and fertile soil around Mt. Aso. The stems are thinner than normal takana and each individual takana leaf is picked by hand using a technique called the “takana fold”. You can only try Aso takana meshi in this area, so don’t miss it from your Kumamoto Japan trip itinerary!
🌋Mt. Aso: http://www.aso.ne.jp/~volcano/eng/ind...
▶︎ Sitting directly along the “Ring of Fire”, Japan is no stranger to volcanic eruptions. Mt Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, consisting of 5 mountains (Mt. Nekodake, Mt. Takadake, Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Eboshidake, and Mt. Kishimadake), is considered to be one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, with Nakadake having last erupted in 2021. Despite this, it’s possible to see directly inside the Nakadake crater! The observation point to see inside this famous Japanese volcano reopened in November 2022, but is sometimes closed due to the volcanic gas and when visibility is bad, so make sure to check the current volcanic activity updates before visiting!
Looking for things to do around Mt. Aso? It is also possible to ride horses near the crater from early March to mid December and visitors can see cows and horses grazing on the grassy plain, Kusasenri, next to mount Aso.
