Expedition to the Congo to fish for a Goliath Tigerfish on fly.

As far as adventure goes nothing is more outlandish, far-fetched or even as downright impossible as targeting Goliath Tigerfish on fly. At least, that is how it always was until I discovered this special river in Central Africa.

This is your wildest dream! – crystal clear water abound with more than 100 species of fish, giant oyster beds and jellyfish in the flooded pools, it doesn’t even make sense most of the time and when you think you have seen it all; a 100cm+ Goliath tigerfish comes cruising towards you in a foot of water to come and inspect you. No man that has ever targeted Goliath tigerfish in the Congo will ever be able to attest to the remarkable anomaly of how the Goliath is encountered in this place. Sometimes there is a pair of them in the propwash of the boat looking for an opportunity or a school of them porpoising in a pool like dolphins hunting… its simply mind-blowing. But, that’s not all. Nile Perch, the “Kamba” and the enormous “Vundu” catfish are here as well, all four of Africa’s freshwater giants in one small river. All of these fish attain sizes of over 100lbs ad some of them in excess of 200lbs!
