In Hallstatt Europe, during the early iron age, people used different types of ceramic pots: from containers of food and cooking vessels to burial urns. Depending on the, people used a different creation process which is best shown with the amount of different added materials besides the pure clay, like quartz sand and grog (ground up old ceramics. The cooking vessels contain most additives to make them more durable and resistant to fire and constant changes in temperature.

Depending on the burning process, the ceramics will have different coloration. If it was fired on an open heart, it would maintain the red/orange color of clay. If fired in a potter's kiln, where the flow of air is restricted, the ceramics become gray or black.

A combination of the two could be used in the process of firing, leading to different coloration of the outside and the core. Pots could also be decorated in many ways, like paint or applied clay decoration.

Especially prized in inland Europe were the imported ceramics from the Mediterranean civilizations, like ancient Greece. These reflected the high status of the owner.

Some pots were used to cook either meat or vegetables, but most contained mixed provisions.
