If sadness and nostalgia were written in this melody

One of the most beautiful and poignant solo piano passage : this is the piano cadenza of Arthur Lourie's "Concerto Spirituale" played by Nikolai Mazhara.

A hybrid work for piano, choir & orchestra, written in 1929 by Arthur-Vincent Lourié (Propoysk 1892 - Princeton 1966).

Of Jewish descent, Naoum Izraïlevitch Louria converted to Catholicism early on, changing his identity for the first time to Arthur Sergueïevitch Lurye. His studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory did not please him: a teacher as conservative as Alexander Glazunov could not suit this young man who dreamed of modernism. In fact, he joined the Russian Futurist movement, frequenting poets, painters and musicians at a time when daring was still allowed in Russia. He sympathized with the principles of the 1917 revolution, to the point of taking up an official position in the Narkompros (Revolutionary Department of Culture, headed by Anatoly Lunacharsky), but he soon became disillusioned. In 1921, during an official trip to Berlin, he met Ferruccio Busoni, who convinced him to go into exile. A year later, he was reunited with his family in Paris, where he changed his name to Arthur Vincent Lourié. Vincent is an invention in memory of Van Gogh, whom Lourié, a painter in his own right, had just discovered. It was in Paris that he met Igor Stavinsky, with whom he struck up a friendship tinged with mutual admiration. In 1941, following the German occupation, he emigrated to the United States, but this time without changing his name!
