A special Abrams art book publication, 2016 first edition, specially imported from the USA by Bibliophile because it is gorgeous to look at. Whether made by brush, camera or digital programme, Hockney in collaboration with art critic Martin Gayford explores how and why pictures have been made across the millennia in their exploration across boundaries between high culture and popular entertainment and making unexpected connections across time and media. Study the little spot on the noses of figures in the paintings of Caravaggio, Jacob Wrestling with the Angels by Paul Gauguin; four sliding door panels in gold and woodblock prints by Hiroshige and Van Gogh; photo montages, visiting cards with sepia photographs; a portrait of a princess by Degas; Daguerreotypes; a camera lucida drawing by William Henry Fox Talbot; still life; scenes of Venice by Canaletto; the Art of Painting by Vermeer with the most realistic light falling on to the chequered marble floor - understanding art doesn't explain the magic of its creation. David Hockney's Tennis from 1989 is a facsimile on 144 sheets of paper and in a chapter on paint, paper and multiplying pictures are studies of 15th century engravings to artworks by Titian, new combinations of media and technology. The sheer genius of the right eye of the Portrait of a Man by Jan Van Eyck is shown on the opposite page to the full portrait in colour of the man with the red velvet turban. A self portrait in a convex mirror 1723-24 by Parmigianino demonstrates experimentation with perspective in a chapter entitled Mirrors and Reflections. 360 glossy white pages, over 400 colour illus
