The Durham Museum Reopens Newly Restored National Command Train Car!

National Command 1202 has been on display at The Durham Museum since the ‘90s, where visitors have walked through it daily and imagined what life was like during the era of passenger rail travel. In March, the museum launched a community-wide crowdfunding effort to help re-carpet, re-upholster and revitalize the sleeper car to its former glory. With over over 100 donors, the crowdfunding effort exceeded its $30,000 goal. These funds were paired with a generous lead gift from Union Pacific of $25,000 to complete the restoration work. This morning, on the 150th Anniversary of the Golden Spike, we celebrated the newly restored National Command 1202 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Speakers included Union Pacific’s Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer, Beth Whited and former Union Pacific employee and Durham Museum train car host, Raleigh Sheffield.

Our train car hosts have been instrumental in the restoration process. Their input, advice, counsel, and most of all, passion, helped immensely as we worked to restore the National Command. Five members of this group joined us in cutting the ceremonial ribbon: Fred Hendricks, Dave Johnson, Bob McCoy, Raleigh Sheffield and Denny Smith.
