I love learning how to run new machines.

Today I got to take a lesson in this Robinson R44 helicopter.

Soon after we took off- the instructor let me take over.

There’s three basic controls for the helicopter:

You have the cyclic, which moves the helicopter forward, backwards, right, and left.

The collective, which moves the helicopter up and down- with a twist throttle on the end.

And the anti-torque pedals, they control the tail roter and allow you to turn the helicopter in a hover.

The views were amazing we got to fly over the Hudson River Valley and the Bannerman Castle which was partially destroyed in 1920 when 200 pounds of live gun cartridges being stored there exploded.

Next we made a quick stop for some fuel and then I got try hovering.

This was by far the most fun and also the hardest part for me.

I was surprised at how sensitive the controls were- just the slightest input cause the helicopter to respond.

The instructor was amazing- he actually didn’t start flying helicopters till he was 47.

He said that heavy equipment operators and gamers tend to catch on quick.
