It is part of Newport Center, a complex district of business, shopping and entertainment.

Fashion Island first opened in 1967 when its original anchors were Buffum's, J.W. Robinson's, The Broadway, and J.C. Penney. Today's anchors include Macy's, Bloomingdale, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus.

Managed by the Irvine Company, Fashion Island mall has over 180 stores comprised of three levels. During winter season, a 90 foot Christmas tree is placed in the center of the obelisk fountain plaza.
