Research on Acidosis in Cattle

Описание к видео Research on Acidosis in Cattle

Dr. Christina Gruber, Scientist at BIOMIN, provides an overview of rumen acidosis and a rumen simulation model used in the lab to find effective acidosis prevention strategies.

Rumen acidosis is a metabolic disease that affects dairy and beef cattle. It is generally associated with a highly fermentable, carbohydrate-rich diet that result in the build up of short-chain fatty acids which cause a drop in ruminal pH, potentially damaging the animal’s metabolic pH system.
Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is the most important nutrition-related disease afflicting dairy cattle.
Dr. Gruber explains how she and her colleagues at the BIOMIN Research Center use an in vitro rumen simulation model (RUSITEC) to investigate ruminal fermentation in order to develop and test feed additives that effectively prevent acidosis, thus improving rumen performance, animal health and welfare along with dairy profitability.
