UFZ Forest Modeller Dr. Rico Fischer in portrait

UFZ modeler Rico Fischer studies the growth of the whole Amazon rainforest with the help of computer models. He obtains the data fort he forest models from tree measurements and satellites. Forests are , however, complex ecosystems and although forests grow slowly, relatively little is known about how the rainforest reacts, for example, to climate change or disturbances such as forest fires. Rico Fischer wants to know if the rainforest is a carbon sink or carbon source.
