In 1991 these Oakland hills were devastated by a firestorm that took 25 lives, injured many more and destroyed countless homes. In addition, portions of the adjacent Berkeley hills were also severely affected.

This memorial is known as the Gateway Gardens Park & Pavilion. It was created to remember those lives lost. The structure resembles a burnt out home, in the midst of a garden, with rock formations. A nearby sign states it is the Gateway Emergency Preparedness Exhibit Center, and states it was dedicated May 10, 2003.

On a personal note: I was living about 30 miles away in 1991 when the fire occurred - then about 15 years ago we moved to Oakland - bought a home in this area only 3 miles from the memorial. In recent years there have been raging devastating fires in the North Bay and some closer to us, always reminding us that a tragedy like this could strike again, but I feel we are all better prepared now - having learned from the harsh and tragic lessons that happened in 1991.
