Less than a month ago, Typhoon Krathon swept the island. Residents in badly-hit areas like Southern Taiwan are rushing to wrap up repairs ahead of Typhon Kong-rey to prevent further damage. Public art installations are also getting packed up in Tainan and Kaohisung, much to the disappointment of Halloween revelers.

A gigantic pumpkin towering over Aozidi Forest Park in Kaohsiung has attracted more than 200,000 visits over five days. The installation was originally set to be up for 10 days, but that has been cut short to just five.

Saturday and Sunday could be a good opportunity to bring the kids. It’s a pity that it’ll be taken down early because of the typhoon.

And it’s not just the giant pumpkin. Over in Tainan, two adorable inflatables of Kuromi and My Melody were supposed to be on show at Anping Port for 45 days. At 12m tall, they would be unlikely to survive strong winds and will be taken away while the typhoon rages.

This building located on Kaohsiung’s Jiuru 2nd Road was damaged in October, when Typhoon Krathon peeled off its metal siding.

Typhoon Krathon blew away the metal siding. Due to labor shortages in the sector, repairs had to wait for some time after the storm. We’re only just getting started.

With Typhoon Kong-rey approaching, residents were worried that strong winds would make the damaged siding a hazard. They called a technician to find a temporary solution. For now the siding will be unscrewed from the wall and lowered to the ground safely.

We’ll use an angle grinder and a drill to remove the screws one by one, and then we’ll set the metal sheets on the ground.

Similarly precarious sights can also be seen at a building on Bo’ai 1st Road, where a lightning rod was knocked over by Krathon and has yet to be repaired. The rod looks like a spear ready to fall down on to the street. With one autumn typhoon after another, Kaohsiung has not had time to bounce back from Krathon, but already it is bracing for Kong-rey.
