Richie Benaud’s contribution to cricket is unique. As Australian captain he was shrewd, ruthless and successful, as a player his combined skills as legendary leg spinner, capable batsman and fearless close fielder made him a formidable opponent. His switch to commentary box has proved equally successful and now, after 25 years of Test Match commentary with the BBC, he presents his anthology of outstanding performances on the field.

England v New Zealand. Trent Bridge, 1973. New Zealand’s attempt to beat England gave them the then highest ever fourth innings total by a losing team. After having collapsed for 97 all out in their first innings, and Tong Grieg (139) and Dennis Amiss (138*) scoring heavily in England's second innings, New Zealand were set a target of 479 runs to win the match and record their first test victory against England, home or away. They fell 39 runs short, with captain Bevan Congdon top scoring with 176, Victor Pollard scoring 116 and wicket keeper Ken Wadsworth scoring 46.

England v Pakistan. Lord’s, 1982. Mohsin Khan’s incredible exhibition of batsmanship.

England v Australia. Old Trafford, 1961. Benaud’s own finest hour, routing an English side who were coasting to an Ashes victory.

England v West Indies. Headingley, 1969. More memorable spin bowling from “Deadly” Derek Underwood to rip through a West Indies side smelling victory.

England v India. The Oval, 1971. England undone by the spin wizardry of Chandrasekhar.

England v Australia. Headingley, 1981. Botham’s famous visit to the crease - one of the most memorable innings of all time.

England v West Indies. Lord’s, 1984. Fitting tribute to the Lord’s centenary of Test Cricket - a game of genius from Botham, 8-103, and Greenidge “the Hammer” who blasted for home.

Benson and Hedges Cup. Northamptonshire v Yorkshire. Lord’s, 1987. A nerve-jangling match gave Yorkshire their first cup final win in 18 years.
