Tutankhamun, the boy king whose tomb was famously discovered in 1922 by Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter, is arguably the most famous Pharaoh in Egyptian history. Every child and adult alike has heard of King Tut, and Carter and Carnarvon have both gone down in history and folklore due to the artifacts they uncovered in the Valley of the Kings. And today, just a few years after the hundred-year anniversary of the discovery, we continue to learn more and more about the finds. But when you put the information together, when you logically look at the tomb of King Tut, something is clearly very wrong. And I'm not talking about the fabled curse.
Far from being one of the world's greatest discoveries, have we actually been taken in by the greatest historical hoax of all time? It's a bold claim, I know, and it needs far more research, but I'll outline the evidence and my interpretation in this video, and you can make your own minds up, and many of you, no doubt, will leave a comment below, and I welcome your comments.
First of all, whether or not his tomb was robbed in the past is irrelevant to this particular study. Some say it was, even though there were still many amazing artifacts, whilst others say it wasn't. Whatever happened, the tomb of Tutankhamun was quite a jumbled mess of artifacts on its opening, some of which were clearly thrown down whilst other objects were placed inside haphazardly, giving it the appearance of an old Egyptian store cupboard, not the tomb of a pharaoh who began restoring the much-loved gods to the people of Egypt after the heretic ruler Akhenaten had made the unpopular decision to change state religion.
Furthermore, in recent years, the majority, if not all, of the items attributed to the boy King have actually been proven to be secondhand, and Egyptologists admit this. These artifacts include the middle coffin, miniature gold coffins for his internal organs, a gold breast ornament, some of the gold bands on the mummified body, and gilded statuettes, all of which were originally made for other royals. More gold items as well as an enormous guilt shrine have also been proven to come from Akhenaten co-regent Smen Car.
Recently, new research by British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves has revealed that even the famous gold death mask of the boy King was originally made for somebody else, most likely a female. This has come from a detailed re-examination of an inscription which is found on the objects which shows that the boy King's name was actually inscribed over an earlier individual's name, and not just any name but one given to Nefertiti after she became co-pharaoh of Egypt. Furthermore, Dr. Yasmin el Shazli, an Egyptologist, says that the face and the headdress on the death mask were welded together. They were two different pieces, whilst the death mask of a pharaoh was usually one complete piece. The ears on the mask were also originally missed, which is unusual for a male. The faces on the canopic jars used to store the organs of the pharaoh are also female, and the face is clearly different from that on the death mask. But of course, the mummy in the tomb is certainly male, but it was found in such a terrible state. Dr. Robert Connelly, an anthropologist at Liverpool University, worked with forensic archaeologist Dr. Matthew Ponting and with a scanning electron microscope discovered that the flesh had been burnt while sealed inside the coffin. And why we are told that the mummification was botched? Yes, it was botched.
Research has shown that the combination of embalming oils, oxygen, and linen in Tutankhamun's mummification process caused a chemical reaction, leading to temperatures of over 200 degrees that cooked the King's body. Additionally, Tutankhamun's heart is missing, with Egyptologists attributing this either to carelessness on the part of the undertakers or to the heart being too decayed to be preserved. The mummification process of Tutankhamun appears to have been botched, as evidenced by the presence of poorly made artifacts, including an iron dagger and 16 miniature blades, that were not fit for a king. The use of iron was particularly odd, as it was a rare and precious metal at the time. Moreover, decorative fittings found in the tomb contained imagery that was completely alien to Egyptian art and had to be Mesopotamian in origin, which archaeologists agree must have been imported from Syria and placed in Tutankhamun's tomb. There were also gold objects with Syrian cultural and religious symbolism found in Tutankhamun's tomb, which was very unusual as the Egyptians typically buried their kings with only Egyptian art. The scientific analysis of all the gold artifacts in the tomb revealed that they had highly differing compositions and were clearly a jumble of random artifacts of differing origins, styles, and ages.
