Do you feel comfortable riding in the rain?

It has been raining here for the last few days with no end in sight, so I thought it would be a perfect time to brush up on some rain riding tips.

I don't know many people who prefer to ride in rainy weather, but sometimes you just can't avoid it. The first thing to consider is your attire. Make sure you are wearing proper waterproof gear or else you run the risk of hypothermia in colder climates.

Next, when riding, choose a rain mode if your motorcycle has it. This will typically adjust traction control settings/throttle response, and may even reduce horsepower depending on the motorcycle.

Make sure to be loose on the controls and inputs. Your goal is to maintain traction. Brake and accelerate smoothly. Always scan the roadway for debris and other hazards. I often run into washed out sand and gravel after a rain storm.

Keep to one side of the lane where you see tire marks from cars. This patch is usually slightly more dry. Avoid the center where there can be oil drippings.

Avoid painted surfaces, manholes, grates, and an surface that is not asphalt. Those surfaces become very slick in the rain and can cause you to lose traction.
