Описание к видео Kashmir's walnuts - harvesting and processing

#Kashmir’s walnut farmers are getting very low rates despite a good quality produce. The lockdown after abrogation of Article 370 last year deprived them of good market rates due to lack of transportation out of the valley. This year, despite a bumper harvest, #walnut #farmers are finding it difficult to sell the produce as traders are struggling with last year’s unsold inventory. It costs farmers Rs 1700 to ready 1,000 walnuts (a kg has about 100 walnuts). But the average price on offer is Rs 200 this year, with Rs 250 per kg for the best quality produce. Walnut pickers climb tall trees, often falling and this is a frequent cause of morbidity during the harvest season between September and October. The labour rate for climbers is Rs 3,000 per day which adds to the cost. The outer green shell of walnut is removed manually. The #fruit, with its well-known brown shell, is then washed in running water, mostly in nearby streams. After repeated washing, walnuts are spread out on grass, where ample sunlight is available, for drying. Once fully dried, they are sorted and packed for transportation.
