John Silence, created by the British author, Algernon Blackwood, is a psychic doctor, whose special powers are employed in aid of those suffering from 'psychical afflictions'.

In the second tale, Ancient Sorceries, the good doctor attempts to make sense of a story related to him concerning a small Cathedral town in France, in which a number of its cat-like denizens are practicing the dark arts.
