In this History video lecture for UPSC, we're covering the topic of Indian National Congress.

Many organizations were founded between 1858 and 1905. One of the most important organizations to be founded at the time was All India Congress. In 1885, A.O. Hume planned to start this organization and he was helped by Surendra C. They planned the first meeting in Pune in 1885, which later happened in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1886. This meeting was presided over by Womesh Chandra Banerjee.
One distinctive feature about the AIC congress was that they never convened at the same place but rather chose various towns and villages to meet each time. This made people aware about the AIC’s existence and people started to join the organization. This was how the AIC differentiated itself from erstwhile organizations. This was a well planned strategy to increase their reach.

Among the great people who have been a part of the meeting, the chief was Dada Bhai Naoroji. He presided over congress thrice, but wasn’t the president in the first meeting because of the rule that one couldn’t preside over a meeting happening at a certain place if they were from the same place. AIC started with 72 members. Initially even the British people would attend the meeting, but they stopped when AIC started gaining popularity and power. Other important nationalistic leaders of AIC were Firoze Shah Mehta, Surendranath Banerjee, Shishir Kumar Ghosh. In 1890 when Kadimbini Ganguly presided over the AIC, it brought women into the mainstream freedom struggle of India.
